A SURE WAY TO CATCH BROOK TROUT When the black flies and mosquitoes get really thick, and the water has warmed, the brook
trout become very active . This usually occurs the first week of May in Northern Michigan. This is your time
to have some fun catching brook trout. This was my cousin Jack's sure bet for fishing brook trout. It works every time.
Wear lots of bug dope.
You need a simple spin casting or spinning rod with 6 lb test
line. Use a #5 Gold snap swivel, a #4 Gold thin wire hook and minnows about 2"-- 3" long. The minnows are
not live...just keep them moist in a bait can with wet grass. Hook the minnow down through the back with the point coming
up through the bottom and out just in back of head. You will have enough weight to cast downstream as far as you can,
about 20'-- 30'. Let the current take the line tight and the bait will be on top of the water. As soon as the line
becomes tight, slam the butt of your rod with the heel of your hand and the minnow will slide sideways across the current,
wiggling as it goes.
The brook trout will hit it so fast you can't believe it. Jerk the rod
immediately...you cannot jerk fast enough to jerk it out of the fish's mouth. You will hook every fish. You will
get a bigger run of fish on these minnows than on any other bait.
Try
it this Spring and have fun Fishing!
HOW TO MAKE BUG DOPE BETTER When
the mosquitoes and black flies are driving you crazy, Buy Noxema and a strong liquid bug dope and mix approximately a half
and half concoction (until it is still pasty). It spreads on better, lasts a lot longer and is easier to wash off your
skin. Try it...it really works.
MODIFYING INLINE SPINNERS FOR PAN FISH Inline spinners have a tendancy to snag on logs, weeds, rocks or whatever. So let's start with a #0
Spinner (Mepps, Panther Martin, Blue Fox, etc.)...clip off the treble hook with wire cutters. Now we will add a split
ring and attach a snap swivel to the spinner. You can snap on a #6 snelled hook, add a gob of worms or a minnow and you are
all set. If you use 8# or 10# line, and you still get snagged..with a steady pull, you'll straighten out the hook and
get your spinner back. You will find that you have fewer snags, lost spinners and plenty of pan fish. For
larger fish, use a bigger spinner and snap on a weedless hook with a minnow, plastic worm, night crawler, etc. Remember,
with any inline spinner you also have to use a snap swivel on the front or it will twist your line.
SIGHTING IN YOUR DEER RIFLE First
sandbag your rifle on a good bench rest. Make a Bullseye that your crosshairs will cover up at 100 yards..usually
about 1/2" in size. You fire when you can barely see bullseye all around the crosshairs. Practice keeping this smaller
bullseye covered as your gun fires. If you do this, you will have the proper squeeze on the trigger and you will
automatically shoot smaller groups. Then adjust your groups to hit 2" above this smaller bullseye and you will be right
on target at 200 yards.
Practice this...it works and will improve
your long range shooting. Good Luck Hunting.
